NotebookLM gets Deep Research
Deep Research feature that builds a research plan, browses the web, gathers sources, and returns a polished report
☕ hello!
The shift is subtle but significant. We're moving from "AI helps me work" to "AI does the work while I supervise." And the scary part isn't that it's happening—it's how naturally we're accepting it. Nobody's asking "should AI be in my group chats?" They're asking "can I add it to this one too?"
—Here’s to the first sip.

ChatGPT tests new group chat feature

OpenAI is testing a new group chat feature for ChatGPT, and it’s basically the first real step toward making the app feel social. It’s available for users in a few regions like Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan, and it works for Free, Plus, and Team accounts on both web and mobile.
The setup is simple. You tap the people icon, add whoever you want, or just share a link. Each group can have up to 20 people, and ChatGPT sits in the chat like another member. If you want it to speak, you just tag it. If you add someone new later, it creates a fresh group so the original conversation doesn’t get messed up.
Under the hood, the bot uses GPT-5.1 Auto, so it can still search, generate images, look at files, and all the usual stuff. Only ChatGPT’s replies count toward your usage limit, so people chatting with each other doesn’t eat into anything. Privacy stays in place, too private chats and memory stay private, and group chats are invite-only.

NotebookLM gets a new Deep Research tool

Image: Google
Google is giving NotebookLM a pretty big upgrade, and the highlight is a new feature called Deep Research. Instead of opening a bunch of tabs and digging through sites yourself, you can ask NotebookLM a question and let it handle the heavy lifting. It creates a research plan, browses the web, gathers sources, and then comes back with a clear, organized report you can drop straight into your notes. If you just want something quick, there’s a “Fast Research” option too.
Google is also adding support for more file types. You can now bring in Google Sheets, Drive file URLs, PDFs from Drive, and Word documents, which makes it easier to summarize spreadsheets or paste in multiple Drive files at once.
These updates should roll out to everyone within a week. NotebookLM has been expanding steadily since launch, with features like Video Overviews and Audio Overviews turning dense material into watchable or listenable summaries.
